Take Action!
Do your part to protect civil liberties in Massachusetts. Simply click on an action item below.
1. Join the ACLU! -- or Make a Contribution if You're Already a Member! If you aren't a member of the ACLU, please take one minute to join right now! And if you already are a member, any additional gift you can make to support our work will be put to good use right away. Don't wait for 2008 -- we have so much that we need to do right now! * Holding the Bush Administration accountable for warrantless searches, domestic spying, torture and rendition; * Ensuring that the rights of every person in Massachusetts -- whatever their race, sexual identity, religion, or national origin -- are respected and upheld; and * Educating people about their rights, and helping to create the next generation of civil libertarians. Click here to join or click here to make a contribution.
2. Stop Ideological Exclusion and Censorship at the Border! Professor Adam Habib, a renowned South African scholar, has been blocked from entering the United States to attend meetings and speak at academic conferences, and the ACLU has filed suit on his behalf. Immigration officials should not be in the business of closing our borders to people with political views they don't like. Please contact Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice TODAY and tell her this is wrong, and ask her to grant Professor Habib's visa.
3. Stop REAL ID in Massachusetts and Across the Nation! A) Massachusetts has joined the growing number of states that have introduced legislation opposing the implementation of REAL ID. Urge your State Senators and Representatives to support SB 2138 and oppose REAL ID.
B) Senators Akaka of Hawaii and Sununu of New Hampshire have introduced legislation in Congress that would address many of the privacy and civil liberties concerns of those who oppose REAL ID. Click here to learn more and urge your Senators to support S. 717: the Identity Security Enhancement Act.
4. Restore Habeas Corpus and Fix the Military Commissions Act! Contact your Senators and urge them to co-sponsor S. 576, the "Restoring the Constitution Act of 2007." Then follow the links provided (or return here) to urge your U.S Representative to co-sponsor the House version -- H.R. 1415, also called "Restoring the Constitution Act of 2007." These bills restore the Constitution's habeas corpus protection of having a court decide whether a person is being imprisoned unlawfully, and they roll back the worst abuses of the Military Commissions Act. Please note that Sen. Ted Kennedy and Reps. Bill Delahunt, Barney Frank, John Olver, and John Tierney have already cosponsored these bills, so you will not be able to send this message to them.
